A Short Biography of Timothy Young
Timothy Young was born in St.
Paul, Minnesota in
1949, the oldest child in a family of 11 children. He made his way through the University of Minnesota while holding many unusual
jobs. He finished his coursework while serving as a cattle inspector for
the Minnesota State Veterinarian. In 1977 he graduated with a Bachelor of
Arts degree in English. Then he began a two-year adventure. First, he lived
in the mountains of the eastern Mexican state, Puebla, with
the Totonac Indians. Then he went on to be a
police and fire dispatcher in the small Alaskan town of North
Pole, outside of Fairbanks.
In 1979 he returned to Minnesota and began
his graduate work in Journalism and Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota.
As a graduate student he began to seriously work with poetry: writing,
performing and coordinating events. Yet he continued his past patterns and
took on various workloads while pursuing his graduate studies. In 1981 and
1982, as the publisher and editor of a colorful neighborhood newspaper, The
Frogtown Forum, he won numerous press
association awards for his local journalism. He went on to coordinate the Frogtown History Project, which provided neighborhood
multicultural events and historical programs, including a television
documentary, which aired on public television in 1989.
In 1983 at the coaxing of the literary figure, Meridel
LeSueur, Jim Dochniak's
Shadow Press, USA
published his long broadside of poetry, Men
Don't Dance in America, one of the early anthems of the
then-budding men's movement. While performing poetry and music with Poetry
for the People, the politically active ensemble, he participated in the
Peace and Justice Movement in Minneapolis.
From 1983 through 1988, with Roy McBride, Susu
Jeffrey, and Maureen Skelly, he co-hosted The Northland
Literary Review, a weekly radio program of live and recorded prose and
poetry. In 1983, 1984 and 1985 he won awards for his community arts and for
his short stories. In 1986 he was given The Lake Superior Contemporary
Writer's Award for his chapbook collection of poems, Men Don't Dance in America. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he participated in
Robert Bly's annual Men's Conferences and served
as an organizer and coordinator for three of those conferences. In 2002 he
began to teach poetry at these conferences.
When his son was born in 1986 he shifted away from performance and his
community responsibilities and focused on his family work. In 1993, with
his wife and son, he moved to a small farm in rural Western
Wisconsin where they rehabilitated a one hundred twenty year
old farmstead. His poetry shifted toward more personal and naturalistic
depths. In 1995 he began to perform again with Meeting Rivers, David Schmit's ensemble production of music, chant, poetry
and dance. In 1999 his poem, A Thread of Sunlight, was included in
Scribner's The Best American Poetry of 1999. The Thousands Press
published his first book of poems, Building
in Deeper Water, in 2003.
From 1997 until 2004 he taught juveniles at the Minnesota
Correctional Facility in Red Wing and retired late 2004. In late autumn of 2004 he released a
compact disc recording of his poetry, Riding
a Dark Wind, on which the guitarist, Glen Helgeson, provided original music. In 2005 Timothy started the Two
Boots Poetry Tour, an ongoing presentation of music, personal poetry and
the poetry of neglected American Masters. With other poets and musicians Two
Boots ventures into libraries, schools, correctional facilities and other
venues. In 2007 he moved to Bloomington, Minnesota and recorded Snow Has Fallen, a collection
of poems and songs written with the Wisconsin
singer/songwriter Yata, and Timothy began a music and poetry collaboration with the violinist, Dalyce Elliott.
Jazz composer, Dan Cavanagh wrote and recorded
with Timothy, a three-movement suite for big band for his poem, Mississippi Ecstasy.
